DFW Car & Toy Museum Showcases Historic 1962 BMW 700 Sport, Highlighting BMW's Pivotal Moment

The DFW Car & Toy Museum recently added a historic gem to its collection, a 1962 BMW 700 Sport, which marks a significant milestone in BMW's automotive legacy. This vehicle, part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection, is not just a classic car but a symbol of BMW's strategic shift towards performance and precision engineering during a critical period in its history.

Designed by the famed Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, the BMW 700 Sport boasts a steel monocoque chassis known for its rigidity and agile handling. The Sport variant is particularly notable for its distinctive body profile, featuring a shortened greenhouse and a more rakish rear-window angle, along with a rear anti-roll bar that improves stability and cornering performance.

Under the hood, the 700 Sport is powered by an air-cooled 697cc flat-twin engine, showcasing the engineering brilliance of its time. The car has undergone a thorough restoration, with critical components like the cylinder heads, crankshaft, and camshafts being rebuilt. Enhancements such as dual Solex carburetors and a custom stainless-steel exhaust system optimize the powertrain's performance, which is delivered through a four-speed manual transaxle.

The interior of the 700 Sport is a testament to the automotive design ethos of the early 1960s, offering a driver-focused environment equipped with seatbelts, hand-crank windows, a fire extinguisher, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel.
